The gate of heavenly purity is the main gate of the inner court. During the qing dynasty, a throne was placed at the gate for the emperor to give the imperial audience to the government officials. In front of the palace of heavenly purity, there is a rectangular platform. There is a small gilded pavilion standing on each side of the platform. The one on the east is called jiangshan pavilion, representing territorial integrity of the country. The one on the west is called sheji pavilion, representing a great harvest in agriculture.
In the ming and qing dynasty, the emperor used to live in the palace of heavenly purity and handle state affairs. Later, after the third qing emperor yongzheng moved his living quarter to the hall of mental cultivation, this building was used as an audience chamber for receiving ambassadors. Here was also the place for holding the deceased emperor. And the most famous “banquet of thousand aged people” was held twice here.
There is a plaque hanging up in the center of the palace of heavenly purity with an inscription “be open and above board” written by emperor shunzhi. After the emperor yongzheng, the crown prince was no longer announced public. Because the emperor yongzheng witness his brother dethroned twice by his father. He decided to appoint his successor secretly. The emperor would write down the name of the successor on two pieces of paper, and put them into two small boxes. He would hide one box behind the plaque, and the other one was taken with him. When the emperor passed away, the two boxes would be opened and checked at the same time. Then the successor would be announced on the spot.
Just behind the palace of heavenly purity is the palace of union and peace. It was the place for the empress holding the important ceremonies.
Inside the hall, there are 25 imperial seals, symbolizing the imperial power of the emperor. 25 were regarded as the heavenly number. Because the odd numbers of one three five seven and nine were added together, for a total of 25, it indicated that the qing dynasty could last at least 25 generations. The water clock was on the east and the chiming clock was on the west. Above the emperor’s throne there is a plaque with two Chinese characters: wuwei. Wu Wei is Taoist philosophy , meaning that to govern the country by adapting oneself to the change of nature ,or refrain from action. Another meaning is that to govern the country should change the people by means of virtue.
Next we are going to visit the palace of earthly tranquility. It was used to be the empresses’ residence. The west chamber was a place for offering sacrificial ceremonies to worship the Shaman god.. The east one was the weeding chamber of the emperor. So it was painted in red and decorated with big Chinese character “double happiness” which symbolizes the happy marriage of the emperor and empress.
The imperial garden is located on the north end of the Forbidden City. The main building in the imperial garden is the hall of the imperial peace. It is the only religious building on the central axis. It is a Taoist temple and the statue of xuanwu inside .xuanwu is the god of water, it could prevent the building from fire. And there are 4 pavilions in the courtyard, representing the 4 seasons. There is a hill in the garden called the collecting elegance hill. It made of taihu rock. There is a pavilion on the top of the hill called imperial view pavilion. It was built for the emperor and empresses to enjoy the scenic beauty in and outside the imperial palace.
Now we are arriving at the north gate of the Forbidden City. It’s formerly called xuanwumen . Because the emperor kangxi’s name was xuanye, the word xuan had the same pronunciation as his name. At that time, it’s taboo to mention the name of the emperor, so it’s renamed as shenwumen.
On the tower of the gate, there are bell sand drums. In the old days, the bells were beaten in the morning and the drums were struck in the evening to mark time. This gate was also used for the empresses and concubines when they attended the silkworm ceremony.
